I was on hand as a Safety Consultant during the construction of a maritime production platform. It was a unique experience that I will try to give you an impression of through this article.
- • The production platform is 65 m high, weighs 2,100 tonnes and is equipped to process 168,000 barrels of oil and 350,000 m3 of natural gas per day.
- • During the construction of the platform, the number of people on the day shift could get as high as 900 people; there could be as many as 600 people in the evening shift.
- • The workers came from a number of different countries.
- • The working language was English but many of them only spoke their own language.
My job as Safety Consultant was primarily:
- Continuously walking safety rounds to identify risks and hazardous situations and to ensure that they were dealt with properly.
- Walking safety rounds with the client, the producer and the subcontractors.
- Co-ordination between the client, the producer and the subcontractors to support the Safety Advisor Contractors.
- Coaching all of the personnel (our own company’s and the subcontractors’) to ensure that they would work more safely.
- Daily reports for our own principal and the client.
- Accident and near-accident investigations along with the principal, client and subcontractor.
- Ensuring compliance with legislation, procedures and permit requirements.
I worked on this project with a great deal of pleasure and gained a lot of experience in terms of prevention.
